There has been recent sexual assaults of tourists in Spain. The victims are not only tourists but those studying abroad. The USA State Department gives Spain a Level 2, which means increasing the caution among travelers and those studying abroad due to terrorism. Currently, there is civil unrest in Barcelona and Catelonia.
It is vitally imperative to realize and be aware of is not all countries treat sexual assault cases the same. The WHO stats show that 35% of women and up to 10% of men worldwide are victims of some kind of sexual assault.
In some countries, staring too hard or for a longer period of time. Sex outside of marriage can be considered sexual violence.
What should travelers do before hopping on that cruise or plane?
- Research the destination on statistics of sex crimes. How common is it there or worse yet, is it legal?
- Lean some self defense.
- Sexual assault divergent classes which is basically verbal judo to diffuse a possible situation.
- DON’T GET DRUNK. Excessive alcohol is a beacon for a serial attacker hanging out at bars, poolside or on the beach.
- Watch all bartenders like a hawk as they are making your drinks.
- If traveling with group, don’t wonder off. If traveling alone, don’t go anywhere you can’t see the street or remember where the street is.
Even military personnel traveling abroad face this issue. It can be on base or even if they are on down time out cruising or sightseeing. Now, the issue overwhelmingly involves a fellow officer. In 2014, over 20,000 sexual assault military personnel were assaulted.
According to a Forbes magazine article July 26, 2019, the most dangerous country for women travelers is South Africa. 32 million American women travel alone every year. A major calculation was how women felt about street safety. Well lit streets are important. Canvassing windows is another one so those inside can monitor the streets.
The U.S. government issues travel warnings for countries and regions all over the world. The come in different levels 1-4 with 4 being the highest. Travel agents should automatically include the latest update to their clients.
